Visualise Sound

Brief

Find a way to visualise sound using a song of your choice and bring the sound to life through either print, illustration or digital media.

 

Concept

My concept was to use animation to create a film showing the visualisation of sound. In addition to this, I created a flick book that allows the user to experience the song from start to finish through print. I also designed a poster to capture the essence of the brief. 

 

Solution

Cymatics is the process of seeing sound waves through matter. In this instance I used an extremely light powder (lycopodium powder) on a 12 inch speaker rig and created various visuals depending on the different frequencies throughout the song. The colour scheme had taken inspiration from the creator of cymatics (Hans Jenny's) prints showing the visualisation of sound through cymatics. I decided to create a film, flick book and poster in order to answer the brief. I thought a flick book would be a playful way that people can interact with the book and see each individual visual throughout the song.
